'The intensity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the antenna and the transmitter, according to the equation defining that relationship', Jake told the lecturer in an uninterested tone of voice. 'Excellent !, that covers everything we have to cover today, however I noticed that very few of you engaged in an effort to study today's lesson and any other lesson for that nonte that we have had the beginning of this term, I would like to see you improve on this as a class so what I have done is printed a list of study partners, you will get together with your assigned partner and I will grade your effort tomorrow, is that understood ?', he was trying the best he could to impose a tone of authority. There were a few unidentified responses from the class. The lecturer moved to the board and pinned up the list, he closed his file and left the class. This annoyed Jake severely. In his opinion everyone in his class was an underachiever and the only thing he saw coming out of this was a lower average. He hoped the lecturer had the foresight to give him an intelligent study partner. He sighed; the lessons were beginning to get to him, they were unbelievably slow for college level education or perhaps it was the fact that his advanced education has only prepared him too well. A crowd gathered duly around the board and dissipated in a few minutes, a lot of people did not even bother looking but instead chose to take an early exit to the cafe so they could grab their lunch. Jake went up to the board to take a closer look, he moved down the list and found his name listed next to Susie's. That quite disappointed him, Susie was a very quiet shy girl, not really the type to answer Communication Engineering questions confidently, on top of that Jake expected this would be a difficult day as she would probably be uncooperative, still, he tried boosting his confidence by thinking perhaps no one will ask her any questions tomorrow and he would get a perfect score. Either way she appeared to take her studies quite seriously so it could not be as bad as he thought. Susie was talking to three other girls at the back of the class, She was quite a tall girl and very voluptuous. her dark braided hair accented her full oval face where metal rimmed glasses took their place. 'Well, it's a bit too late to do that now I think, the lecturer's orders were quite specific, I think he will take it in a bad way if we show up tomorrow with different people' He was trying to be tactfull. 'And also I have very high standards I don't want to team up with just anyone' That was Jakes attempt at humor which Susie took very well with subdued laughter. 'Ok no problem' she beamed. 'When do you want to meet ?' 'If it's not a problem now would be good, we could go get something to eat, do you have a car? ' 'ye, yes' She was getting nervous. 'Shall we go to your house ? Do we have a good enviroment to study there ?' 'yes , ok' 'where shall we meet ?' Jake wanted her to get involved in the deicision process, he didn't want her to think she was being forced into all his decisions. 'At the car park in 10 minutes ?' 'Ok great !' I'll see you then. 'Ok'. Jake walked out of the class. It was excruciating talking to her and he really hated the lecturer for choosing his partner without consulting him, perhaps he should talk to him about it, his office was on the way to the car park. Jake knocked on the door and walked in. 'Hello Sir'. 'Hi Jake, how's it going ?' 'Pretty good thanks, are you celebrating the anniversary of the transistor ?' Jake smiled. The lecturer paused for a moment. 'Yes it's today isn't it !! I'll open a bottle of bubbly later ! I noticed you were pretty quiet in class today'. 'Yes I was in deep thought over your antenna length theories' The lecturer laughed. 'Don't worry, it will get a lot tougher tomorrow !' 'I wanted to talk to you about the group assignment, some people in the class are a bit nervous about getting together with people they don't know...' 'I understand your feelings on that, you see what we are trying to do is promote teamwork, we do this kind of thing all the time, by putting together different elements of the class we can promote friendships and better communications between students, I am going to do this extensively with this particular class especially because I've noticed a lot of people have been lagging in their efforts and I'm hoping this group effort will stimulate intellect' 'ok, I understand. I just wanted to ask, I was a bit surprised by your decision today. I've got to go now, I'll see you tomorrow, bye' Jake walked out the door. 'BBye !' Sure enough Susie was at the car park, standing next to a black Renault. She waved to Jake. She was not really sure how to take the group thing. She has always felt shy talking to guys and today's surprise was no exception, it created a lot of discomfort for her to be thrown into the fray with another guy she barely knew. However she felt better knowing that Jake will probably guide her through the study as he was the smart type. 'Ok let's go' Jake was squinting in the hot sun. They got into her car and she drove out of the car park. There was an uncomfortable silence in the car, he did not like talking in cars and she preferred concentrating on driving. --- She parked the car in the garage and they got out. Jake took a moment to look at her house, it was a bricked two storey compact with green shutters. The house was heavily carpeted something he thought was very luxurious and the wall separations were wooden, it appeared to be heavily and comfortably furnished but there was a shortage of free space. 'Let's get something to eat' she blurted out and he followed her to the kitchen. She opened the stove and the microwave only to find them empty. 'oh, there's nothing here', she opened the fridge 'this is very embarassing' Jake took charge, 'I'll cook something for us', he went to the fridge and looked in, 'I think I can manage fine with this, ok don't worry about it, have a seat and I'll get something going' Jake busily moved around the kitchen collecting what he needed for his cooking. Susie was thrilled that Jake took charge and was actually going to cook something. She was just about to ask him if he wanted take out when he took charge. 'Ok I'll be back in a few minutes, she went up the wooden staircase. It took quite a while for jake prepare the meal. --- Jake could hear Susie coming down the stairs and glanced towards her.
